Although we can not post each and every whale watching trip that we take offshore, we will do our best to post as many as possible. Thank you for your understanding.

April 28, 2012 Whale Watch

12 noon Whale Watch - Krill

Atlantic white-sided dolphin

Mother and calf pair. Atlantic white-sided dolphins
As we headed offshore, the winds let go which made for a much more comfortable ride. As we crossed Cape Cod Bay towards Race Point, we picked up our first sightings off Race Point Beach.  Here we had a small pod of Atlantic white-sided dolphins.  In this pod was a mother and calf pair and the calf was sticking very close to mom's side.

After leaving the dolphins, we moved into Cape Cod bay and found a small humpback whale just off Herring Cove beach. We identified this whale as Blackboard who was first seen in 2009. Blackboard was moving slowly in the area, but didn't appear to be feeding deep.
Northern gannet
As we held position for Blackboard, we saw a finback whale in the distance and a few minke whales. We also had some great looks at Northern gannets and Double-crested cormorants who were also in this area.

Bubble Net
Suddenly, we saw a huge splash of water off our starboard side. This splash was created by a humpback named Reflection who was started kick-feeding right off Herring Cove Beach. What a sight to see this female use her tail to create a disturbance as she prepared to dive deep under the bait. After one or two kicks, Reflection would then blow a bubble net in an attempt to concentrate the bait.

Wonderful day offshore with at least 2 humpback whales, 1 finback whale, 3 minke whales and 30 to 40 Atlantic white-sided dolphins. Seabirds included Northern gannets and Double-crested cormorants.
